    Noom Diet

Most realistic and sustainable program, some tweaks needed

    Overall Experience:

I have tried many diets and eating plans throughout the decades of my life and Noom is the best. It is the best because it is about your whole life, not a quick fix. It takes the useful elements from other plans and incorporates them. It is about creating a sustainable way to live healthfully. I appreciate that the program acknowledges and helps us understand that slip-ups are part of the journey and not about beating ourselves up. I appreciate the discussion about the set point (though I do not quite understand how to lose weight in light of one's body's set point). I appreciate that no foods are forbidden foods. It offers important tools and frameworks to build healthier habits. It tries to support you in succeeding by offering an accountability mechanism through offering a coach and a support group.

There is room for improvement. I wish that the group chat was in synch with the homework assignments. The homework suggests posting about a particular topic, but the group couch encourages posting about something else. I have stopped participating in the group chats as a result as it is more useful for me to think about the homework assignment than about other topics. I believe that others would participate more if we were discussing the daily lessons.

Also, there are a few issues in the daily "homework" that really resonates for me (mindful eating, portion sizes, satiety scale) and others that do not resonate with me but probably resonate for others (e.g. eating more green food, preparing meals at home, being mindful about drinking your calories). I wish I could spend several weeks just focusing on the issues for which I need the most support. I wish I could just focus for weeks on getting a grip in my life, for example on the satiety scale, so that I can really incorporate that into my life. But we seem to move quickly from topic to topic.

My personal coach is good at being in touch. He asks me questions about my plan for the week and my answers to these questions does help to keep me accountable. That is a crucial part of the Noom plan. But the personal coach is not really personal. He does not know the issues that I face and have faced with weight loss my entire life. Sometimes I just don't feel like answering a bunch of questions about my plan even though answering those questions DOES help me. People who are thinking about joining Noom should know that the personal coach is not someone you are talking on the phone with and sharing your personal struggle with. It is someone who texts you to help you make a plan and stay on track.

I joined Noom after a friend told me she had lost 10 pounds in seven weeks. For me, in five weeks I lost 4 pounds and then regained them. But I am still in it to win it, and I do recommend Noom to others who have tried and failed repeatedly at diet programs.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
