I recently went through a family crisis and wanted someone who could give me an objective take on it. I contacted BetterHelp and they refused to deal with me. I replied to their email and asked why. I received an overly-polite response, suggesting I wasn't a good fit, and that I might check with a one-on-one in-person counselor who took Medicare. Because I didn't say anything unusual in my initial contact or follow-up, I can only assume BetterHelp practices age discrimination and that I have been a victim of it. All I can think to do is spread the word to others my age, to save them the insult and possible injury due to this ever-growing form of discrimination. I also called my daughter, a marriage and family counselor, so she can let her clients and colleagues know. It's sad that things like BetterHelp show up online, but I suppose the internet allows anyone to pull just about anything.

I started to use BetterHelp when I realized I couldn't cope with my emotions and I was going through a difficult time with my marriage. I separated from my husband and I couldn't understand my own feelings. I didn't have money for a classical therapy, and also I didn't feel that one meeting per week was enough to pull me out of my situation, so I looked for alternatives and I've decided to give it a try.

I change the first therapist who was assigned to me because he took a while and never answered my first text, and I needed someone immediately, so I couldn't wait. At that point, I could choose through a few therapists and I met Ava, who has become my reference whenever I am on an emotional swing. She is so nice and kind and asks the right questions at the right moment. She is able to make me think when my emotions are numbing me.

I definitely recommend using BetterHelp to who, like me, either doesn't have money for normal therapy or feels that just one meeting per week is not enough of a support.

1. They made it very easy to get a discount through an automatic system of seeing if you qualify for a discount. The discount I received I felt became a very reasonable price for my income.

2. I had a negative experience with a therapist who became unresponsive, but BetterHelp asked me about my experience. Upon hearing of this experience, they promptly gave me an extra week to make up for any lost time. It was more than fair.

3. I also found an extremely good therapist. Sadly for BetterHelp, I am canceling my subscription because the therapists was so good that I have already gained the help I was looking for and I no longer feel I need therapy.

What can I say except that trying out BetterHelp was an excellent idea and I congratulate myself for it. Money well spent.

First...my therapist is so knowledgeable and I have made so much progress with him. I send him a message and hear back from him in a timely manner. The biggest criticism I get when I tell people about BetterHelp is that they don’t want to try it because they don’t get to physically meet the person they are talking to. I started utilizing BetterHelp almost eight months ago. My life was in disarray at the time due to a marriage breakup. I was also diagnosed as clinically depressed and was on medication, which was helping, but something was missing.

This is where BetterHelp came in and my counselor Jessica Booth. Jessica was amazing. She asked a lot of tough questions and helped me deal with things in my life that needed addressing if I was to move on from where I was.

Over the past eight months, I have gone from a person that could barely get out of bed or do his work to moving forward at a rapid pace.

I won't tell you it has been easy because it has not been. Jessica helped me a lot, but I had to do a lot of work on me with her guidance. Knowing Jessica and the resources of BetterHelp were there for me helped a lot.

One of the nice things about BetterHelp is its availability. Basically you can access your therapist 24/7/365, which is extremely important in the beginning. When I ask my questions it seemed to transfer the stress.

I saw the reviews on BetterHelp and thought it couldn't hurt to give it a shot, though I had been skeptical about online counseling. To my great surprise, it's been working wonders, is just as effective as in-person therapy, and they provide discounts to people with financial hardship. Due to my income, I get my sessions for $32.50/each, which is a third of the price of my former therapist. I do video sessions because I find it easier to talk and interact that way, but you can do chat and phone if you'd prefer. I'm very grateful to BetterHelp for allowing me to take care of my mental health and still being able to pay my rent.
