Overall, I would recommend the Noom program to anyone who wants to lose weight AND is comfortable with consistent smartphone app use. I didn't have any expectations or know much about HOW Noom worked before I decided to try it. I've only lost 5 lbs so far, but understand that I needed to get into the right headspace first and ease into this new lifestyle slowly. These are my opinions after 10 weeks.
PROS:
- Uses psychology to help you lose weight. This is the only program I've seen that focuses on the mental aspects of weight loss and explaining WHY we do what we do. Understanding the mental part is critical to being successful.
- Easy to understand, easy to follow.
- Reasonably-priced.
- Daily reminders help keep me on track. Logging weight and all food daily helps reinforce what and why I'm participating in the program. It also provides data/statistics, which I like!
- Doesn't advocate manipulation to make an unhealthy food into a healthy-seeming one (e.g. coconut flour pancakes smothered in butter and syrup is still not great for you, even though you subbed the white flour).
- Gives you info on ways of eating in case it's something you want to try in addition to Noom (intermittent fasting, paleo, low carb, vegan, vegetarian, etc.).
- Encourages you to treat yourself (however you see fit).
- Personal coaches help with hurdles, goal setting, motivation, provide exercise resources, shoulder to cry on/rant-to, etc.
- App is extremely easy to use, in a minimalist design so it's also easy to look at.
- Doesn't push you to exercise (at least at the beginning), and gives you options based on what you like (slow and easy yoga, or heart-blasting HIIT).
CONS:
- WAY TOO MANY HASHTAGS and references to nerds! Not everything is a hashtag and you don't need to call yourself a nerd to appeal to "young" people.
- Step tracker is garbage. Really only works if Noom tracker is open/active on your screen. Not a big deal since I use Google Fit to track steps, but have to adjust steps daily in the Noom app because it doesn't work right.
- There are a surprising amount of typos.
- Too many tasks that have no substance other than to tell you to prepare for the next task. Consolidate! Every day does not need to have 6 - 7 tasks!
- Some tasks require you to fill in a typed-in answer, but doesn't always make sense or apply (e.g. week 9 "Write Your Story" task). I just filled in nonsense because that task did not apply.
- Difficult to find tasks where you've typed in a response, in case you want to refer back.
- Food tracker is inconsistent. The exact same foods will be listed multiple times and one will be considered "red" and the other one "yellow."
PERSONAL PREFERENCES:
- The group component is not for me. Lots of complaining, mostly a few people always posting their same workouts or shoveling snow/doing yard work. Lots of people missing all the wine they drink?
- Definitely geared towards young women. Doesn't matter to me but might feel alienating to men.
- I love the recipe feature, but many of the recipes are 0% green, which isn't helpful.
- Very app-based. Would be nice if there was also a browser-interface.
- Wish there was a quick red/yellow/green food reference available on the sidebar menu. It becomes intuitive with time, but would be helpful, especially in the beginning.
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
