I was scrolling through my news feed on Facebook one day and saw an ad for Noom. I'd never heard of it before so I looked into it. It was easy to find everything I needed to know about it and it sounded like it was worth trying. I'm a former binge eater and any restriction diets are off limits for me since feeling deprived can lead me right back into to panic eating.
Before Noom, I had already cleaned up my food lifestyle quite a bit and was eating sensible portions but I was only ever able to keep myself from gaining more weight. I didn't lose weight though, no matter what I did. I'm very limited with exercising because of a severely strained piriformis muscle that was misdiagnosed for over a year, causing it to be such a mess that it's resistant to any treatment now. The only way to heal it is to keep the muscle calm which means no walking or running for exercise and no movement that puts too much use on the muscle (like stairs or hills).
I saw comments on the Noom ads from women who were my age (50) and in similar situations where exercise was limited for them too, and they were reporting real weight loss. That made me decide to give it a try.
I loved Noom instantly. Everything about it makes sense to me. The grouping of the foods into color categories has helped me the most. I quickly realized that even though I was eating mostly the right things, I was being far too generous with things like the butter I cooked my veggies in and cheese and mayo and other high-calorie foods. So even though I was eating small fist sized portions, I was using tons of unnecessary calories to flavor it.
Noom made me start looking for solutions to this so I could stay within my colors and calories each day. I found that I actually liked light mayo, reduced fat cheese, ghee, and that I could use a lot less of all of them and still be satisfied with my food. I don't enjoy fat-free versions, but I was able to change to reduced fat options with no effort at all. I don't even notice the difference!
There were other areas I was able to slow my calorie roll as well. I was drinking one 16 oz bottle of soda a day, but I realized that I could easily just pour myself 6 ounces in a big glass of ice and be perfectly happy with that amount. It looks like a lot in the glass and makes my eyeballs think I'm having plenty, but my tastebuds and stomach can agree with it too. A whole bottle was more than I really needed.
Noom for me is me basically eating the same things I did before only I lowered the calories and found ways to adapt them so they were mostly green and yellow group foods.
The best thing? I am having MORE of the things I love now instead of less. I have pasta more often. I just load my sauce with lots of veggies. I eat ice cream almost daily where before I never had it because I felt so guilty. I get the best Ben and Jerry's flavor I can find and have a few spoons of it, and it's incredibly satisfying because I can enjoy it thoroughly with no guilt whatsoever. It's easy to have a small amount because I know I can just have it again tomorrow if I want it! Because I know I've made the changes elsewhere in my eating that makes it completely ok to have it.
Noom is not a diet to me. It's a common sense way to have it ALL. There is no question that I can live this way forever because I'm not only not missing out on anything, I've actually gained more pleasure out of eating!
The number on my scale is going down and my energy levels are going up.
And it's the easiest thing I've ever done.
Thanks, Noomnerds. I'm your number one fan now but not in a creepy-stalker-serial killer kind of way, I promise.
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
