I should have used this sooner

By Brian P., Colorado Springs, CO, Verified Reviewer

I was raised to believe that "real men never need counseling." That I was tough enough to never be afraid, and that my experiences have shaped who I am.

While there are certain aspects of my life that have emboldened me to be that guy who never showed fear, the advice of friends and family helped me to understand that maybe none of us are as tough as we think we are.

I had seen a few counselors up until this point who have ranged from being "one trick ponies" who subscribed to one form of therapy; to hiding behind their many hundreds of degrees covering their walls. This therapist was so obsessed with his instruction, and the rich and successful people he had talked to, that he didn't care about what I had to say.

So long story short, I wanted to find someone who actually listened, and would offer genuine help. I had been brooding over this until my wife suggested I try BetterHelp. I wasn't sure about not meeting face to face, and over the phone, and texting seemed kind of hokey. But I decided to give it a shot.

I don't mind saying that they were very concerned with finding out what I was looking for. They had clearly dealt with people in my position, and really wanted to help me get the help I needed. So they assigned me a counselor, and he was nothing like the others I had gone to. He didn't talk down to me. He actually listened to me, and helped strengthened my mental faculties. I would recommend this app and all the services they offer to anyone and everyone.

BetterHelp is a savior

By Bianca A., Salinas, CA, Verified Reviewer

When I hit rock bottom and didn't know what do to, I turned to BetterHelp and within hours I had a professional helping me. I was matched with a counselor that is knowledgeable and is understanding about my personal values, cultural, and religious believes. I have had access to my counselors at all times and she responds promptly. I am truly grateful for this service. I don't think I would have been able to have the personal growth I've done during the pandemic without this virtual service.

Really great and convenient

By Niki S., Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I was a little apprehensive when I first started because not only was it my first sort of experience with therapy (I had a school counselor but she wasn't very good), it was also the first time I was ready to work through alot of the issues that were arising from my childhood sexual abuse experiences. Having it online is very convenient and fast. You can speak through text/chat, video, or phone call. Be mindful of having a decent internet connection of course. After answering questions I matched with a counselor, she was very helpful and encouraging and she has really helped with the depression and self-loathing issues I was having, among other things like boundaries and intimacy-related issues. Additionally, I found BetterHelp's customer service to respond very fast and be very understanding. They are extra nice and helpful.

People should be aware of the difference between therapy given by Psychotherapists vs Counselors and what the difference might be though so they can better know what they need. Changing counselors is very easy as well and financially they settle or give credit for any weeks you did not use in the case that you wish to unsubscribe for a certain reason. They allow for a 3-week hold on payment as well if a person needs a break of 3 weeks or less.

Altogether I would definitely recommend BetterHelp to people.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Customer service was fast, efficient, and extremely considerate

Quick access to a counselor that helped when I really needed to talk to someone

Can send a text or message to the counselor at any time before a session, with scheduled hourly sessions by chat, phone or video chat makes it very flexible and easy to work around your schedule

Allow for a hold in subscription for up to 3 weeks

They charge for the whole month at once and continue to charge

Felt it was a bit costly at first but I haven't been to a counselor or therapy before so that is expected

Online counseling, does it work?

By Karenann L., New York, NY, Verified Reviewer

The answer is absolutely. I went to BetterHelp when I was in crisis. My marriage was in shambles. I felt like my life was over and had nowhere to turn.

I was matched to an amazing counselor that helped me take the steps for a better me. I feel like I can move forward with my life, and make better choices in my relationships, because of him. I feel like I can now face my problems and make better decisions, and I've only been doing this for 3 weeks, and I am extremely satisfied.

This has to be the best service out there for someone like myself because you have options on how you speak to your counselor. I'm very introverted, I get anxious speaking about my past to someone I don't know, especially in person, but you can video chat, phone call, or message. I can reach out to my counselor, even if it's not a scheduled visit, at any time. My counselor made me comfortable in the fact that I can just message him what I'm going through and he will answer me quickly to direct my focus.

A+++++++ service.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy communication, you can message your counselor any time and they get back to you whenever they can, besides your weekly sessions

You get matched with a counselor that understands and has experience with the issues you have

Affordable and discounted if you qualify

It's more like 24/7 service

Video chat never works

Fantastic service

By Elizabeth A., Owensboro, KY, Verified Reviewer

I'd gone to therapy before but struggled with scheduling. BetterHelp has been excellent. I can message my therapist and get a thoughtful response in 24 hours, and we can still have sessions via phone/web conferencing. I honestly feel more in touch with my therapist through BetterHelp than I did with traditional counseling. That's even more true now because of the pandemic, with so much going online. I'd recommend BetterHelp to anyone wanting to go to counseling.

By Allison E., Roman Forest, TX, Verified Reviewer

My family recently had a significant tragedy occur. I was connected with BetterHelp through my employee assistance program. They matched me with a counselor right away. Bang for your buck and brain

By Katie G., Omaha, NE, Verified Reviewer

Taking the plunge and finally seeking professional help has been one of the greatest decisions of my life. BetterHelp made it as painless as possible for me to deal with my problems and trauma.

It’s not free, but it is affordable. 2020 hit my bank account HARD and I resisted for a while until it finally just clicked, "I am worth it." I was seeing the stress of this year affect every area of my life and my world was crumbling around me. I was struggling in ways I never struggled before. I had so many "weak spots" that came crashing down when I couldn’t run from them anymore. My therapist has been such an encouragement during this process of building myself back up. She equips me with the perspective and hype I need to do the work I need to do on myself FOR myself.

Very glad I found BetterHelp

By Jennifer L., Indianapolis, IN, Verified Reviewer

It’s difficult to find a counselor face to face, let alone make it work with your schedule. Add in the current pandemic complications - more stress! I was apprehensive about online counseling, coming from an old school medical background myself, but this is a wonderful service and I was so well-matched with my counselor. Add in the convenience of being online and it’s perfect! And if I need to communicate with my counselor outside of our weekly sessions, it’s so easy to do so. Highly recommend.

This service has been invaluable to me during this year of big personal changes. My counselor Diana helped to turn a crisis into growth by introducing me to practical tools and new perspectives on my situation. Convenient therapy

By Lindsay H., Buffalo, NY, Verified Reviewer

I will never go back to in-person therapy! I sought help after experiencing postpartum depression and anxiety and was matched with a great therapist who was able to help immediately. It was easy, convenient, and safe during the pandemic. She offered 24/7 support via text, plus weekly phone or video calls. I wish I had started sooner!

By Tony S., Atlanta, GA, Verified Reviewer

I heard about BetterHelp through a podcast which highlighted that BetterHelp's network of counselors were all licensed practitioners. That was important to me because I didn't want to spend money on a counseling service with folks who weren't properly trained. I liked that I was able to see my counselor's qualifications prior to the meeting.

I feel very fortunate to have been paired with an excellent counselor (Dr. Cole) who truly understood my problems and helped me work through what was weighing on my mind. I don't know if I was just lucky or if the pool of high-quality counselors runs really deep at BetterHelp. Regardless, I would highly, highly recommend BetterHelp to others - being able to speak with a compassionate, professional counselor made a world of difference for me and helped me be kinder to myself and to be more compassionate toward others.

Pros and Cons

Do not wait

By Mia D., United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

Fantastic, to say the least!

If you are down, feeling lonely, anxious, this is the app for you. Whatever is the issue you are facing, they have the specialist for you. My overall experience is great, in only a few months I had my life turned upside down for the better!

I have several friends who attend face-to-face sessions somewhere else but they never got the results I had with this app! You select your time, call, message, or video call, and your therapist is there. The app pairs you with a specific person based on your issues and preferences, and from my personal experience, I couldn’t have been paired with a better one!

I definitely recommend this app to anyone in need. You will never regret it! If something, I only regret to not have found this app before!

Give it a go, you can cancel at any time and I am sure you will thank me as I thanked the person who suggested it to me. We have all been there some time, here you will realise you are not alone and things don’t need to be that way forever, it’s only a moment that will pass. The therapists in this app will help you do that as fast as possible.

Easier than you'd think to try therapy.

By Linda S., Pennsylvania, Verified Reviewer

I've been in therapy previously, one on one. I'd get frustrated being kept waiting when they run late week after week. I would hold back because I didn't want to go home to my kids after crying and being upset. I stepped away from therapy for a long time and when I felt I needed it, I had to try online therapy.

I started with Talkspace they were more expensive and I wasn't happy. I signed up for BetterHelp and got established. Talkspace offered a good deal to stick around so I used both services concurrently. Finally, I was able to get my therapist to check out BetterHelp and she joined.

My therapist Ashley Travers has been wonderful, I like being able to join webinars, or schedule my own video session with Ashley.

Therapists are hard to find with Covid but they're there when you need them at BetterHelp.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Interact with my therapist 5 days a week, better than trying to save it all up and then try ti figure out what's important enough to bring up.

I can write anytime, I know my therapist checks in twice a day, I look forward to hearing from her, he's been my lifeline.

The prices make this kind of service do-able.

I feel like I have a lifeline now, there's someone that cares.

There are times I've been in a crisis and while I could write out my thoughts it didn't help that no one was accessible.

Seminars on more specifics, bipolar or depression, specifics on coping with anxiety attacks.
