I was raised to believe that "real men never need counseling." That I was tough enough to never be afraid, and that my experiences have shaped who I am.
While there are certain aspects of my life that have emboldened me to be that guy who never showed fear, the advice of friends and family helped me to understand that maybe none of us are as tough as we think we are.
I had seen a few counselors up until this point who have ranged from being "one trick ponies" who subscribed to one form of therapy; to hiding behind their many hundreds of degrees covering their walls. This therapist was so obsessed with his instruction, and the rich and successful people he had talked to, that he didn't care about what I had to say.
So long story short, I wanted to find someone who actually listened, and would offer genuine help. I had been brooding over this until my wife suggested I try BetterHelp. I wasn't sure about not meeting face to face, and over the phone, and texting seemed kind of hokey. But I decided to give it a shot.
I don't mind saying that they were very concerned with finding out what I was looking for. They had clearly dealt with people in my position, and really wanted to help me get the help I needed. So they assigned me a counselor, and he was nothing like the others I had gone to. He didn't talk down to me. He actually listened to me, and helped strengthened my mental faculties. I would recommend this app and all the services they offer to anyone and everyone.
