I was seeing so many ads on IG about teletherapy and how “this is your sign to sign up for therapy” that it was getting annoying, to be honest. I had tried finding a therapist on-and-off for years when I still had insurance, but never clicked with anyone. It was honestly discouraging. Fast forward to the BetterHelp ad popping up looking like one of those BuzzFeed questionnaires when I was going through a really tough time, and I thought “what’s the worst that can happen?”
I took the quiz and read through the comments, reviews, and what the service offers, but the deciding factor was definitely the price tag. As someone who’s unemployed from this pandemic and newly without insurance, I didn’t think I could afford therapy, but BetterHelp made it accessible. I was matched with a therapist within 8 hours and after reading through her bio and exchanging a few messages, I decided to set up a phone session. We got on from the jump and though I’m still relatively new to the service, I’m very happy that I stumbled upon that ad whilst scrolling through my IG explore page at 3 am.
My mental health is better for it and I feel like I’m gaining control over myself and my anxiety again, which is something I didn’t think was possible anymore. The groupinars are also very helpful (and low pressure because they’re like participating in an IG live but for a specific mental health/wellness topic you’re interested in) and supplement what I get from the individual therapy sessions.
If you’re on the fence, I’d say check it out because there’s a reason that ad popped up in the first place and you can always cancel if this service doesn’t end up being the right one for you. Good luck and stay safe y’all!
