My therapist is dope

By Zoey B., Oakland, CA, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp was easy to sign up for, let them know my needs, and then they assigned me a therapist. She’s wonderful. I can contact her any time I wish, and she gets back to me quickly. She’s my champion, and it’s wonderful to have someone to bounce my emotional ideas off of.

Best investment for the pandemic

By Sana K., California, Verified Reviewer

I, like a lot of people, was starting to feel lost and unstable from all the uncertainty of the pandemic. I was looking to find some help to get myself back on track and I'm so happy I stumbled on BetterHelp.com. I was able to find one of the best therapists I've ever had who in a short period of time has not only helped me get back on track but helped me carve out the life I've always wanted. I feel like myself again and I can't express how grateful I am to my therapist for helping me get there.

10/10 for affordability, therapist matching, and supplemental resources this amazing platform provides. Whether you're unemployed or employed you can still get the affordable help you need at any time.

BetterHelp is the best answer to therapy hands down

By Donald Rowan H., Bloomington, IN, Verified Reviewer

I have seen many therapists over the past 20 years and have always been frustrated. I felt that I spent a lot of money sifting through counselors who never fit. It just wasn't sustainable and I gave up. However, BetterHelp is uniquely designed to not only allow you to easily find the right therapist but it is ridiculously inexpensive in comparison. Furthermore, you have access to counselors all over the country as opposed to just the city you live in. I can't say enough good about BetterHelp.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The abundance of counselors and ease of finding the right fit

The ridiculously reasonable price of therapy sessions

The community of people that I encountered and became a part of

Trivial: I wish the video sessions had a way of blurring the background or having a virtual background for privacy

Just give it a shot

By Shelby W., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

To be honest, I was really resistant to the idea of online therapy. I thought I needed an “immersive” experience to be able to gain anything from it. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I hit a breaking point and decided something is better than nothing and I just went for it. I didn’t like the first counselor I was matched with so I picked another one and hit the jackpot! I feel so comfortable with this person I’ve only recently met. She’s helped me learn how to slow down and shift my mindset away from my black and white thinking. I can’t wait to see what else I can learn and what other skills I can gain from working with her!

There's always someone for you

By Valeria D., Tampa, FL, Verified Reviewer

I've used BetterHelp on and off for a few years now and it's been a truly helpful experience!

There's a wide selection of counselors that you can filter through if you want someone more relatable to your own experience, e.g. more religious, POC, or LGBTQ. The profiles include areas of expertise, a short blurb about themselves, and their hours of availability which makes it easy to choose a counselor and not get paired with someone who doesn't match your schedule.

I've gone through a few counselors for different conflicts in my life, and each had truly helped me in that area of my life - getting out of an abusive relationship, going through an intense couple of breakups, going through college as a first-gen student of color, getting my driver's license, setting life goals, etc.

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy to get mental health counseling

Affordable

Sessions available on my schedule

Sometimes you match with someone you don't click with and it's awkward to tell them you don't fit

Counseling from the comforts of home

By Alyssa L. , Texas

I really liked my overall experience. It was nice being able to have sessions throughout the day and the comfort of my home. And not having to travel. I just didn’t feel like 30-minute sessions once a week or enough to really dive in and make a difference. You can buy additional sessions but the cost starts to add up.

BetterHelp healers

By Ami A., McAllen, TX, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has definitely helped me find the right counselor to work with and ever since my first session I am glad to say that I am improving my mental health. BetterHelp is an excellent online counseling platform that you can connect with an available and professional counselor at the convenience of your own home, office, or wherever you log in from. Excellent staff also checks up on you through email to make sure your sessions are going well and you are satisfied with your counselor. BetterHelp offers an option to change your counselor if you need to in case it isn't working out. I appreciate the fact that I can connect with my counselor via video, phone, or messaging which is helpful if technical difficulties happen. I find it interesting that there are different resources and tools that you can use outside of your online session so you can keep progressing on your mental health.

Well needed outlet for people of color

By Qualema W., Jersey City, NJ, Verified Reviewer

I have never had therapy or any kind of counseling and this is the very first time I’ve had to partake in it. I’m very happy with the connectivity and comfort that I’ve experienced with my counselor Janel Blackman. She is a class act and her level of expertise is undeniable. She is so down to earth and makes me feel like I can finally trust someone and express myself fully without judgment. People of color have a very hard time adjusting to the idea of therapy, nevertheless actually partaking in therapy, but BetterHelp offers us an outlet that works with our schedules and allows us to choose specific categories of therapy that we may seek. We have the choice to test out different therapists to our liking, but I truly was lucky to find my perfect match on the first try. I was honest about my feelings and expectations for therapy and the reason why I was partaking in therapy and my counselor was the very first to reach out to me and made me feel at ease and comfortable on the very first session.

I’m grateful for this experience. I would have never spent $320 on anything monthly, but a car note or car insurance, but this service has been worth every penny. You can schedule as many appointments a month as you can. Also, you can use the texting service if you’re not in a private setting to speak and need to have “radio silence”. Or you can simply speak on the phone or do video chats.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Costly for some, but it’s an investment towards mental health

Stop thinking about it. Start therapy with BetterHelp.

By Kathryn P., Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I’ve done many different types of therapy, over many different years, for many different reasons. This is the least invasive, and most trusting forum I have encountered to date. I feel as if I always receive value for money from the service. I would like to add that I was initially paired with a therapist that didn’t serve myself, and within 24 hours after my asking, I was matched with a therapist that makes a world of difference. If you’re ready, they’re ready to help.

Great service that can be better

By James S., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

Love how easy and accessible it is to be used at any and all times but really wish they would find a way to add 3-way calls, advanced scheduling, and insurance coverage. The fact that I can't schedule further in the future is really mind-boggling to me, that seems like an easy add and would make it easier for both sides to use. Also, 3-way calling makes couples counseling a lot harder.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility

Easy to use interface with everything in one spot and on an app

Video calls work easily

No 3-way calls

Far exceeds expectations

By Mo H., Seattle, WA, Verified Reviewer

I was skeptical at first about BetterHelp, thinking that something so easy to sign up for and get started with right away couldn’t be that high of a quality. Fortunately, I was proven wrong!

When my first counselor wasn’t a good fit for me, customer service went above and beyond to make things right, and I was able to personally select my next counselor, who has been absolutely amazing! I’ve made huge strides in my life, and I attribute those to the progress that I’ve made working with her.

I’ve done in-person therapy before, and it was expensive, time-consuming, impersonal, and ineffective. BetterHelp is affordable, works completely around your schedule, you get to choose how you interact with your counselor, and the counselors available on here are truly amazing, skilled professionals. It’s easier than it looks, don’t hesitate to try!

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy to use

Accessible to all different kinds of people

Professional

Subscription tiers are too broad

Can be hard to schedule ahead of time

First counselor might not be best fit

Great service and great people

By J T., Poland, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a great platform to talk to licensed counselors and really feel like they will listen. I love that you can change counselors at any point if you don't feel comfortable with who you were initially paired with. The tech support is timely and extremely helpful.

So why 4 stars? I feel that the price is slightly over where it needs to be. With one meeting a week and paying $300+ a month it is better priced than most counselors, it is still an online counseling session so you do not get the same in-person connection. Maybe allowing 2 sessions a week with no additional charge would be worth it.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

This app is going to end up killing someone

By Judy B., Springfield, IL, Verified Reviewer

I had a psychotic episode about a month before I ended up on BetterHelp. After my episode I had a hard time getting in to see someone without admitting myself to an inpatient unit. My dad suggested this app to me. I had one Zoom session with her and all I had to say to her was “sometimes I feel like I’m 5” and she from there said “oh maybe you’ve got some multiple personalities?” And from there I literally dissociated constantly just from the thought of it. I was having headaches and I was very very sick. I couldn’t keep food down and when I asked her why this “therapy” process felt so unnatural she just said that it was from the dissociation and would be very short with me. I ended up in the hospital having what they now think was a bipolar 2 episode but it was triggered by the seed she seemed to plant in my brain. I could’ve easily lost my life with the way this “therapist” handled me. This app SHOULD NOT be used to treat severe mental illness and I’m almost wondering if it isn’t connected to something much darker than just “helping people”. Stay away from this app.

Better help, better me

By Chun G., New York, Verified Reviewer

I went to BetterHelp because I wanted support in healing from my childhood trauma. BetterHelp customized a list of therapists based on my needs. From there, I was able to find a therapist pretty easily. My therapist makes it so easy and comfortable to talk to; it was easy for me to open up and talk about my feelings. There are many options to work with the therapist depending on your comfort level - you can chat, email, call, or video chat. I prefer video chat as it mimics in-person sessions. I have had about 10 sessions and really enjoyed them. I found these virtual sessions calming, helpful, and supportive. The therapists are all professionally licensed and have different expertise. It's crucial to find one that meets your specific needs and personal goal. I recommend reaching out to a therapist and explain what is that you need and if he or she can support you to reach your goal, before you book the first session. This way you know whether or not that therapist is right for you. It took me about a week to find a therapist that works with childhood trauma, however, the time is well spent. I was able to find a therapist that I can connect to, that I feel comfortable talking to, and she is very supportive and nurturing.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Super easy to find a therapist and book virtual appointments

Very reasonable cost (probably the most economical one you can find)

Great selection of licensed therapists, with different specialties

It's addictive (in a good and healthy way)

All appointments are virtual, but I found it rather a strength than weakness

I love this new counseling experience so far, it has been extremely helpful for me. I love that it is not expensive, you can message your counselor anytime and get responses. I love the journal suggestions they give, I do them daily and I find those really helpful throughout the week. Plus you can share your journal entries with your counselor if you’d like, I find that great as well because it gives the counselor a better idea of who I am and how I think. The counselor I got is absolutely wonderful so far, she has given me hope and confidence and has really eased my anxiety. I feel really good about this experience so far. I like all the options I have with this app. Whoever thought of this and put this together is awesome. I highly recommend BetterHelp to anyone.
