Helpful, affordable, easy to use

By Alexis N., Oklahoma, Verified Reviewer

My experience with BetterHelp has been entirely positive. It’s convenient, I have even had a few sessions on my commute home from work. It’s much more affordable for anyone who doesn’t have insurance that covers therapy. And most of all, it’s been helpful beyond belief. My spouse recommends BetterHelp to anyone who expresses even a slight interest in therapy because he’s seen how much it has helped me.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

I can never move into traditional in-person therapy and keep my counselor

BetterHelp will get you the help you need

By Micah G., New York, NY , Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp, like therapy in general, will be able to get you the help you need if you are willing to make the effort. The first therapist I had with the service wasn't that great for me but BetterHelp makes it very easy to switch therapists at any time. I then found someone with a PhD (the first was only a licensed counselor) and am now extremely happy and grateful to have my therapist in my life.

Pros and Cons

Quality/services offered by the online platform

This pandemic has been tough and I experienced depression. I did not want to make a trip to a therapist clinic and I also can't afford to pay the hefty fee. I'm so glad I found BetterHelp. It's been 5 months now since I signed up and I found a therapist with whom I connected greatly with. I can't believe there's such an app that provides affordable therapy. Thank you so much!

Just do it...

By Sarah P. , Richmond, VA

I work in the helping profession and I know how hard it can be to connect with therapy (especially right now...waiting lists are very long). Don't hesitate to use BetterHelp. The therapist matching was helpful and I had an appointment quickly and have been making great progress with the therapist I was matched with. BetterHelp is a great resource during a much-needed time.

Very pleased

By Michael M., Savannah, TN, Verified Reviewer

Hesitant to start but very pleased that I did. Had concerns that maybe I didn’t need help or it was too expensive, but I was surprised to see the affordable prices, many options regarding choice of therapist, and convenience of working on my schedule. All of these options made me decide to give it a try and I have been very happy that I did. My therapist actively listens and provides thought-provoking feedback and helps provide me with not only the ability to identify issues and stressors but also tools to manage and overcome these issues.

Life-changing

By Erin A. , Cleveland, OH

I have been talking to a therapist for a few months now and it is changing my life. I know it sounds cheesy but it’s absolutely true! I am learning how to deal with my past traumas. I now have the tools to get through some really tough times that previously would have had a really bad effect on my mental health. Coping after losing my mother this past summer would have been nearly impossible for me to handle in a healthy way without the help of my therapist!

Highly recommend

By Tifany S. , Napolean, MO

If you’re skeptical about therapy, I get it! I was too and thought I could fix myself but sometimes we need a little guidance beyond our ability and that’s okay. BetterHelp is changing my life rapidly in good ways. I highly recommend it because I no longer feel alone and in the dark. I wish I would’ve done this sooner but I am happy I’m finally taking action. Sending you healing on your journey.

Extremely simple and effective

By Trevor S., Denver, CO, Verified Reviewer

As a tech-centric person, a video-based mechanism for mental health seems like a much better option to me than driving to an office once a week. I found video calls to be highly effective and the sign-up and user experience were extremely simple. My therapist really helped me work through some significant stressors in my life and I was able to really progress towards some goals of mine that had been lurking on the back burner. My therapist was responsive and listened well to what I had to say, even though I was mostly non-directional.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease of enrollment

Effectiveness of the therapist

Simple interface

No option for less than weekly sessions

For folks like me who just want mental health maintenance, it might be nice to have a "program" to follow

The kind of therapist that I asked for I got, and she is wonderful. After the first session, I felt comfortable talking about everything that was troubling me.

Excellent

By Elly-Louise B., Sacramento, CA, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has provided me with an incredible therapist that was matched to what I needed within the time period they provided. As I was in a crisis when I looked for therapy, I was pretty resistant at first as I didn’t know what to expect. After my first session, I kicked myself for not starting sooner. I’m in my early 20’s and have just started therapy. It’s never too late and it’s never too early either!

Working for me

By Carol K., Portland, OR, Verified Reviewer

I chose BetterHelp because I couldn’t find an available therapist through my searches on my insurance website or through referrals. BetterHelp was advertised in a podcast that I listen to and I decided to try it. I filled out the form on their site and was assigned a therapist within 24 hours of filling out the form. I like my therapist and find my work with them very helpful. The fact that I can change therapists at any time is a nice added benefit but I’m happy with who I have. I also like the worksheets and journals, which I have used to better understand myself.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Great platform for those who may not have access to a physical office or are not comfortable going to one

By Brandon D., Bronx, NY, Verified Reviewer

This was a great platform that I was referred to by someone as well as saw ads about on IG. The questionnaire that I filled out in the beginning to get connected with my therapist was to the point. I was able to list why I was seeking therapy and who I would most likely want to be my therapist.

I'm a black millennial from an urban city in America so this was extremely important and I got lucky and was connected in about a day or two to a black woman who specialized in the reasons I was seeking therapy. I was able to see an "about me" section that listed all the credentials and experience of the therapist, which made me feel very receptive and trusting about this journey of vulnerability I was ready to embark on with this person.

I had amazing sessions that featured techniques to help me utilize my memory to go back and deal with alot of my past, as well as coping skills to help me deal with the effects of my past for present and future experiences. It was a safe space for me to express anything I wanted and I was not pressured to give any information that I wasn't ready to provide or deal with.

I would definitely recommend this service to anyone and everyone. The only real con to this is that they don't accept insurance so it's all out of pocket, which I hope will be changing soon because accessibility is key. There are alot of people who could benefit from this that may not have the out-of-pocket money to pay for these expenses. Other than that, I had a GREAT experience.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Effective therapy with coping skills, techniques, and a safe non-judgemental space for expression

Specific support group therapy sessions are a great touch to show that a lot of us go through the same things so we are not alone

Unlimited messaging was a great feature for anything that I may have a question or comment about

Can be expensive, please find a way to take insurance, lower income experience a lot of mental health issues as well

Please accommodate people more based on gender, culture, and ethnicity - it will help clients feel more receptive and relate more

Glitches in chatroom therapy sessions, sometimes we can get randomly kicked out of the rooms

Excellent therapy at affordable prices

By Julie T., Phoenix, AZ, Verified Reviewer

Although it took me a while to open up, my therapist didn’t judge. She checked in with me when I wanted to avoid it but didn’t pressure. When I realized I felt safe with this person I started sharing more. She is appreciative of my efforts to get healthier and happier in the most supportive way. Her thoughts provide the feedback I had been missing in my isolation. She rocks!

Brief summary of review

By Antonio C. , Baton Rouge, LA

At first, I was very skeptical of BetterHelp. I didn’t know if I would find someone that could be approachable or at least seem to have wanted to help me. I’ve recently scheduled a session, and BetterHelp matched me with my therapist based on the indicators of what I felt I was having difficulty with. And I have to say, my therapist is really cool. He’s nice, understanding, and genuinely wants to help you, in all ways, so that you can become your best self.

Unprofessional therapist, horrible platform

By Kristen H., Orange County, CA, Verified Reviewer

I had an unsettling experience working with Professor Felder. First, it was very distracting that he is working in what looks like a bedroom, with an open and messy closet behind him and messy personal effects on a dresser. It felt very unprofessional. During one session the door to the room he was in opened and stayed open for the duration of our session.

I am a therapist myself and Professor Felder's clinical skills were not great. He offered interpretations that did not feel like they fit, and rather than listening he often jumped to conclusions. In our last session, we ended up talking about some of my childhood stuff, including some situations with my parents that felt very difficult and hurtful for me. Then, instead of helping me sit with those feelings, offering empathy, or helping me unpack everything I brought up, he immediately shifted to focusing on my body language (me brushing my hair back from my face, and the fact that I was holding a pen) and said that he had been "baited" into talking about the past. There is a time and a place for here and now interventions but this was not the time or place.

If felt off, and I communicated that to him, and instead of hearing me he doubled down on defending the shift into body language interpretation instead of attending to my feelings of my childhood wounds being ignored. I ended the session feeling manipulated and unseen. I would caution others who are dealing with deeper emotional wounds to choose a therapist who is better at listening instead of having an agenda that plows over your own emotional experience.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Initial ease of use

Lack of responsiveness

Dishonest withholding of negative reviews on therapists

Underpaying therapists so that the platform is full of sub-par clinicians

Love this site!

By Maria M., California, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been amazing. The customer service is wonderful. I love my counselor and I love that if I didn't connect with her I could easily switch to another one. I was able to be matched with a counselor within 24 hours. It's so easy to use the platform. I love being able to write/text my counselor as needed and also schedule live sessions. It's so relaxing to be able to do this from home without having to worry about going in the office. I also love the fact that I can have a session over the phone if I don't want my video on. I would really recommend this platform to others!

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Great flexibility and reliability of communication

Get a counselor pretty much anywhere

The text session is an amazing counseling tool, I love it

The video platform could be better, but it's not designed to be a collaborative work environment like zoom or something, so it gets the job done
