Summary

BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. The efficacy of BetterHelp is linked to provider skill and intervention protocols, but there are some drawbacks if you fall into certain categories of needs and it’s not covered by your insurance provider.

This works!

By Mark J., Maine, Verified Reviewer

I am 57 years old and have never done any type of therapy previously. Due to some life events, I recognized the need for some help in getting some things straightened out in my head. I needed to do online therapy, and an internet search led me to BetterHelp. Their algorithm or method truly matched me with the best therapist for me. After eight weeks, I am back on track and perhaps even better than ever.

BetterHelp really has helped

By Stephen M., London, United Kindom, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been a very helpful and easy-to-use service during these difficult times. It’s fitted well to the limitations we’ve been put under in the last year or so. The service is good, there’s more than just a counselor, there are tools and webinars so it’s a well-rounded service.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility and therapy from home

The supporting tools like webinars

I’m lucky to have a good counselor

The payment window to therapy window not lining up (charge period starts before therapy period, so tricky to line up)

In theory you have a session per week, so can’t miss a session one week then have two the next week

Great for my needs

By Tommy V., Eugene, OR, Verified Reviewer

As a full-time college student, and a full-time worker, I find it hard to not only make time for therapy but make time for myself. BetterHelp is affordable and flexible around my busy life schedule while still being effective! For me personally, I plan to use BetterHelp for a long time, especially while I’m figuring who I am.

I recommend it for those in a similar position as me and even for those who haven’t ever been to therapy before. I hadn’t ever been to therapy before these either so this was totally new to me. BetterHelp was guiding me through the entire process and everything has been working smoothly so far.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

No bad experiences here with BetterHelp

By Lacey M., Boonville, MO, Verified Reviewer

I’ve had a wonderful experience with BetterHelp since day one. They ask you questions about who you are and what you look for in a therapist so they can find someone who will make you feel comfortable.

My therapist, Sharon Jordan, is very empathetic. She listens without judgment and makes me feel like I’m heard. She holds me accountable for things I choose to do that may not be beneficial and homework is given. So, even though you don’t get to talk to your therapist every day, you’re still working on things between sessions.

Personally, I love the video chat option so I can see my therapist. I don’t do well with teachers or therapists when just talking over a phone call or text. So, if you need to see the person, that option is there for you.

They work with your schedule and let you pick the date and time of your session, which makes it very flexible for those who have kids, partners, family, or work obligations. I’m able to budget my cost for the therapy but I do realize it can be pricey for some. So, if you’re able to fit it into your budget I recommend it. I will say it’s quite a bit cheaper than other people I’ve seen in the past.

Overall it’s a wonderful app and it really helped me at my lowest point!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

It asks you questions about yourself to get you with a therapist that is compatible to your needs

It’s a bit pricey, but still more affordable than other places you can go for therapy

There is a video call option so you are able to see your therapist while talking to them

It’s not in-person for those who may require that

Needs longer sessions or possibly two sessions a week if short

I found BetterHelp when I was struggling with depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues. The online platform was easy to use and the flexibility of appointment times made scheduling so much less stressful than requesting time off for in person therapy. I highly suggest this to anyone! Purely positive

By Ross C., London, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

I came to BetterHelp at a time when I and my partner had hit the burnout wall pretty hard and admitted that depression was a very present thing in our lives.

What's come out of BetterHelp for me in my sessions so far is that it is an amazing piece in the puzzle, it's the piece that lets you see where the other pieces go. Therapy isn't the one thing that will fix a problem, but for me, it's been an affirming thing that I'm on the correct course with the changes I am making and being able to talk through that course with someone who is impartial but warm, understanding, and encouraging had been fantastic.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The warmth and joy of my therapist

The workbooks

The accountability

The best thing I’ve done for my mental health

By Donielle P., Louisville, KY, Verified Reviewer

I’ve spent many years trying different therapies and treatments. None of those experiences have improved my mental health as BetterHelp has. It’s been incredibly simple to schedule my appointments through the app, and having the ability to message my therapist is very helpful.

Therapy on my terms

By Peter D., Anchorage, AK, Verified Reviewer

The application is user-friendly. My therapist is kind, but not pushy. Skilled in the ability to ask questions in a way that challenges me, and I appreciate that. Also, it's a skill to be able to effectively communicate matters of mental health in a situation that is not in-person, and still evoke real thoughts and feelings. I imagine every therapist is as high quality as mine and that speaks volumes as to the need and efficacy of this program.

I cannot say how grateful I am for finding this site. Actually, it was an ad on TV, and I thought I'd google it to see what it was like. I read a little, then signed up for a therapist, and waited. It did not take long and I was matched with an appointment set up.

Great once you find the right one!

By Heather S., Atlanta, GA , Verified Reviewer

I will preface this by saying I have been in therapy and counseling on/off since my childhood. I came to BetterHelp after my new health insurance no longer covered mental health.

The first counselor I was connected with was horrible. I gave her a shot for a while and then ended up giving it one last shot and changing counselors. This is when I met CaRen. She has been tremendously helping me transform my life these past couple of months.

The convenience of BetterHelp is great, I love that I can change times each week to fit my schedule and also text with my counselor anytime in between sessions.

Good website with some super amazing therapists!

By GS S., United Arab Emirates, Verified Reviewer

I was assigned a therapist I didn't like and changed in the first week of joining BetterHelp. The process to change the therapist was super easy. And the therapist I found next is godsent. She is perfect and I couldn't have wished for anything better. Forever grateful to BetterHelp for building a platform where I could find her.

BetterHelp also has a lot more resources, such as group sessions where a licensed therapist talks about a particular topic. I'm not much of a listener, but if you like this kind of thing, there are many interesting topics to register.

Amazing therapy in the palm of your hands

By Tyler N., Miami, FL, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has changed my life ever since I started during Covid, over a year ago. It has helped me become more emotionally intuitive, intelligent, and aware of my behaviors and others. Having my therapist just a message away on my phone has been so incredible compared to other therapies. I can have my video sessions wherever and whenever, which truly helps for someone who has a busy schedule. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to start therapy but doesn’t feel like they have the time or is scared to go in person.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility of day and time to book sessions

Convenience of speaking with your therapist right on your phone

Ability to change therapists easily if you feel your current one isn’t a good fit

Depending on the therapists, some have very little availability

Depending on the therapist, some cancel quite often

Depending on the therapist, some take ages to reply to your messages

They want you to succeed

By Daniel G., Pittsburgh, PA, Verified Reviewer

In the time I've been using BetterHelp, I can truly say it's been the best help I've found. And most importantly, they care to make it work for you.

For example, if anything doesn't work right, just make a complaint, and they will extend you a free week to make up the session that didn't work.

And there are many payment options.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ability to pick a different counselor if I want

The flexible payment options and the ability to still use the journaling if you have to take a break financially

The seeming genuine niceness of the customer service

The app seems pretty hiccupy at times, won't connect, drops call, won't open, just sometimes
