Summary
BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. The efficacy of BetterHelp is linked to provider skill and intervention protocols, but there are some drawbacks if you fall into certain categories of needs and it’s not covered by your insurance provider.

BetterHelp matched me with a therapist who was just right for me, which is truly amazing because I probably would not have done the work on my own to find him.
He has helped me work through all kinds of emotionally difficult issues involving my family, including helping me accept what I am not responsible for and can't change.
I feel like using online therapy was way more convenient than having to drive to an office to meet with someone.

This service saves lives. Doing myself a service by signing up was the only hard part. The rest really is a walk in the park as far as getting established with my needs and a therapist. I am super happy with the app also. The journal is a need so I'm glad they put it in there.

I want to say for anyone who is scared, so was I. But I needed to make changes and I needed help. It couldn’t wait any longer. BetterHelp intrigued me and I signed up, although I still waited weeks before making moves. I finally set an appointment with my therapist. I honestly didn’t feel a connection after our phone session. I reached out to BetterHelp and they were so accommodating in helping me find a better fit for me. I told them what I was looking for in a therapist and the woman I was going back and forth with sent me a list of 10 out of their thousands of therapists that she thought fit my description. Now through this, I didn’t see a therapist for two weeks so they didn’t charge me and then gave me a week free just cause they’re awesome like that.
I can’t even describe how happy I am with the therapist I then picked. We have had two phone sessions and two live messaging sessions, which I found so beneficial and fun, and convenient for when you don’t have privacy but still need your weekly session. She is exactly the kind of personality I need in therapy and I’m so excited to continue my journey of healing with her. Oh, and they have group therapy sessions for any time in between visits with your personal therapist. You will find several different social workers and psychologists guiding sessions for people going through things just like you. The topics of sessions are endless and I’ve had 4 amazing groups ranging from relationship-focused to trauma-focused, to a relaxing, guided hypnosis/meditation. Really cool stuff you guys!

I had a therapist match with me and I felt good for a while but then I felt awkward and didn’t feel as though I was progressing much, so I took a break and then switched my therapist.
This has been going great and my therapist is great for me and makes me feel heard and comforted. My only issue is with pricing. I was able to get financial help with BetterHelp due to them understanding that I can’t really afford it comfortably, but I think even with the money off it is a bit expensive and I will need to take breaks in between months.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Opportunity to switch therapist easily
Able to have a live text session rather than phone call and video call
Accessible from phone and able to message whenever
Cost per month
Sometimes your therapist doesn’t suit your needs

BetterHelp is affordable and helps me with my social anxiety. I dont think I'd ever go to therapy because it's usually super expensive and in person, but I can just text from home and that is great for me personally. The therapist I have is supportive and respectful and I feel like I can become a functioning person.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Affordability
It's online
Therapists tailored to your issues
Sometimes therapist is late
Formatting of their app is a "bit" weird
I can't think of anything else

I have found this device to be clever and down to earth. New technology often will not offer something new.
A truly great variety of practitioners.
I would celebrate this piece of new thinking for therapy in practice because it is flexible as well as it is helpful.
Length of Use: 1–2 years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
The flexibility in hours.
The wide range of opportunities to help yourself get better.
The flexibility and ease in finding a therapist.
I did not like the way the therapist can get rid of you for breaking a rule, such as missing appointments.
Missing a session does not get recovered.
Sometimes practitioners play by old rules of therapy in this new context.

I was first afraid to accept the help. Admitting we all could use some, can be difficult at times. And I am glad I followed through with it.
Life feels a lot less heavy, and I might soon find my way back on the right track.
When many voices remain silent, you'll not run into deaf ears here.

To put it simply, I have been blessed and helped thru these online counseling therapist sessions. I have a good person to listen, encourage, and inspire me where I need it. I no longer have to hold all my feelings inside, so I don't run people in my life away. I'm becoming a better version of myself and I like it! Thank you for getting me back to me and in the better health direction!

Traditional therapy through health care can be so outdated. BetterHelp really pairs you up with an appropriate provider. The interface and system are way more helpful! I get quick responses daily. Weekly video sessions or calls. Even financial help to be able to afford it. Way cheaper than traditional therapy as well. I have daily anxiety to work through and the mount of communication I get through this app alone helps so much.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
So many options for communication.
Quick communication.
Option to journal in app.
I asked to be paired with someone of Christian faith and wasn’t. But I’m happy with my therapist.

BetterHelp is a great option for quick help when you need it. My primary care was overwhelmed and I found BetterHelp right at the time my father passed away. My therapist helped me through the mourning and also helped me deal with other concerns I had in general. I'm able to book the appointments at a convenient time for me from the comfort of my home. It's the best way to do therapy.

I was so intimidated to go into therapy, although for years I’ve known how much I could be if it from it with everything I had been struggling with. I was afraid of the cost, not having a good therapist, not feeling comfortable having to talk about my journey and go through all the steps to let my therapist know where I was at so they knew where to go from there, and having to relive the past. With BetterHelp, all those worries were put to rest!
You start off with a survey so you can input all your preferences for your therapist so they can match you to someone who fits your needs and comfort, it was affordable, it’s all online so it’s so easy to fit it into your busy schedule and make it work on your own time, you could send your therapist a message at any time and even switch your therapist at any time if they’re not fitting your needs, and your therapist can assign you worksheets, which was actually my favorite part! Because that way I was able to fill out my “life story” on a worksheet on my own time so that I didn’t have to talk about everything I had been through and relive the past. When I would get overwhelmed just typing about it I could always take a break and resume it the next day even. And I was given worksheets that gave me tips on grieving, sleeping, self-care, and all sorts of other topics I was struggling with so I could always reference them.
You can cancel your subscription at any time, and I only used it for a few months and learned and grew so much from it! I recommend it to everyone because it’s made to fit anyone!

I've had bad experiences with therapy in the past — I don't like when they pry into my past when I'm not ready. Not to mention the time, effort, and cost of getting into therapy when I'm not sure it will even work out. With BetterHelp, I avoided all of that! I feel like my therapist is the perfect match for me. All of the stress I had about getting therapy was solved instantly. I do wish in the advertisements they mentioned more about what they offer. You don't only have a therapist matched to you, they also allow confidential journaling, and even group webinars on different topics. The best part about the webinars is that you don't have to worry about attending, they will send you the recording for up to 7 days after the groupinar. BetterHelp is definitely the way to go if you want therapy!
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
I didn't have to wait months to see a therapist
They match me to a therapist for my needs
I get to look at reviews and information about my therapist before agreeing to get therapy from them
I wish there was more initial guidance or "tutorial" on how to use the app before using it

Overall because of BetterHelp I’ve found the best therapist I’ve ever had, thanks to the groupinars, which are also an amazing resource. Like a private ted talk on a smorgasbord of mental health issues.
BetterHelp, however, needs to improve the functionality of its app and customer service and tech support wrap-around. You cannot easily edit your original mental health questionnaire — this should be part of a bio you can update whenever you want because life doesn’t stand still and neither do we. With my first therapist, we also found it impossible to do video or voice calls.
Customer service was slow, unhelpful, made promises they didn’t keep and ultimately didn’t seem to really fix the problem. I just got lucky it worked with Mitch, or else I would have left BetterHelp to continue the therapy on a different platform. The look and feel of the app also presents as very basic. I’d have thought with the money going into the company you could afford to reinvest a little in improving the platform.
Also, when finding a therapist the boxes you can tick though plentiful do not contain any options for personality disorders (Parent likely has one). Not sure if that list is based on proper user experience discovery work but it could use some tweaking.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
My therapist
The groupinars
Value for money and having control over who my therapist is being able to change easily
Poor quality platform
Customer service and tech support poor for UK
Can’t easily update bio questionnaire

I love that therapy is moving out of the office. I can schedule around my day and fit a session in wherever I can. The platform is very user-friendly. BetterHelp also did a great job in matching me with a therapist so I haven’t had to access switching providers but overall I am satisfied with my experience with BetterHelp.

I have been using BetterHelp for about 2 years collectively and I can sincerely say that it has helped so much. With flexible times, affordable pricing, and so many options to reach out to your personally picked therapist. Forms of communication are text message, phone call, and video chat sessions. You can text anytime and have a live therapy session once a week (from what I understand). Discounts for students are also a plus.
Picking a therapist is finally easy! You take a quiz and pick the therapist profile that best suits your needs and you can even change therapists through the app. I already recommend all my friends to BetterHelp!

I don’t like going into offices for therapy so I thought I’d give BetterHelp a try.
My counselor recommended that I talk to a psychologist first because my mental illness is severe. There were none available on the site so I contacted BetterHelp and they immediately paired me up with a psychologist. They were very fast at responding and helped me in a timely manner.
I’m on my 3rd session now and am starting to learn a little about myself. My psychologist is very thorough and educated. She takes the time to read my messages and respond to each part. She is always on time for our sessions and will talk the full hour. She has even had me fill out some “homework”.
BetterHelp is great for people who have a busy schedule or just don’t like going to therapy in person. I do not think they overcharge their customers. They even sometimes have sales and low-income support. I will be continuing my therapy through them.
My only complaint would be that I wish you had an option to schedule sessions two times a week if you paid more.

I have been struggling with anxiety for some time now. Recently, I've had some changes in my life which have not only increased my anxiety but am feeling, overall, unhappy and unsure. Finding a therapist that I can fit in between work life and home life isn't easy, but that's where BetterHelp comes in. You can choose your therapist based on your needs, and their schedules are fairly flexible, so it fits around you and not the other way around.
Even if you don't think you need therapy, we all need someone to talk to!

BetterHelp has been an amazing way for me to receive the mental support I need virtually, as my schedule does not allow me to meet in person. Their matching process for a therapist is great — I loved mine! I did have a lot of issues with video connection but they were always quick to offer support or provide a bonus session. I do wish they had a plan around $100 that was just for a monthly check-in. Overall, good service!

I found BetterHelp while I was living in Europe and couldn’t get local help. After 2 years with the same wonderful, highly knowledgeable therapist, I would recommend the site to anyone looking for support. I used to pay month-to-month but finally bought a yearly package, which greatly reduced the price. Most importantly, my therapist was available during a crisis when I really needed her — she worked with me over the weekend and made herself available several days a week during that period.
